Where is your hope?

At church on Sunday, we started a new series about Christmas that I found very interesting and touching. And more than anything, filled with hope.

Christmas is typically viewed as a wonderful time filled with friends and family. People are in a good mood. But not everyone feels this way. Some people are depressed and don’t feel any sort of Christmas joy.

What steals our hope? Obviously there can be lots of things. Our pastor pointed out a few items that stood out in his mind as to why we may lose hope. It could be because we think our best days are behind us, because our lives or circumstances aren’t what we expected they’d be, and because the pain of now outweighs the promise of not yet. The magic list

The other day I was watching an adorable movie about a young woman who was trying to find love. Her friends often teased her because she had a list of qualities she wanted her man to have. It included some interesting things – same taste in food, exotic accent, and takes trips on a whim, to name a few. She called it her search for “magic man.”

Big enough?

Have you have ever really wanted to go on a mission trip? Build homes in a different county? Share God’s word in foreign lands?

I know I have.

Not everyone has the opportunity to do such awesome things. Sometimes, it might make us feel bad or guilty, like we aren’t doing anything to better the world.

When I was in church a few months ago, I heard about a book called “Joining Jesus On His Mission – How to Be an Everyday Missionary,” by Greg Finke. I decided to read it because it sounded interesting. I’m glad I did, because it turned out to be a great read. th

For those of us who haven’t been on a mission trip, don’t feel we’re called to go on a mission trip (Which is ok! We’re all called to different walks in life), and even for those who have been on mission trips… We may sometimes feel like we’re not doing enough; we’re not living up to our full potential. Or maybe we want to help, but we don’t know how. I felt that way for a long time.

That’s why Finke’s book was so great – it reminded me of something incredibly important. Read the rest of this entry »
