Amelia's clever notes

Only if you’re 25….?

on September 19, 2012

When I was little, one of my favorite places in the world was the Play Zone (I believe that’s what it was called) in Appleton, Wisconsin. I don’t think it’s there any more, but at the age of 3, that was an awesome place. While I’m not in Appleton anymore, and I haven’t been since I was a little girl, I will always remember the fun I had at the Play Zone. Another one of my most loved locations was McDonald’s, specifically the play place area. I absolutely adored the space ship ride at the very top, and I can remember thinking I’d never get there because there were so many nooks, crannies, twists, and turns; the ship seemed so out of reach. Sometimes I became scared if I took a wrong turn, but the top always motivated me to keep going.

The other day, Craig and I enjoyed a beautiful fall Saturday morning on campus reporting on an art project. Since I work at the campus newspaper, it was my job to go and retrieve information on the story, but Craig was kind enough to come along and help me. He’s probably helped me with more projects than I can list, and since he was once again such a great assistant, I proposed we go to McDonald’s.

At the McDonald’s in Eau Claire, I got my usual favorite combo of a grilled chicken caesar salad with fries, along with a special chocolate shake for Craig. The building was undergoing construction, so right away, it was strange to hear hammering and sawing noises behind a thin tarp as we got some ketchup (Multiple little cups are always a must when one eats McDonald’s fries!).  It was fairly busy at the time we were there, and with the construction, seating was even more limited than it would have been. The only option for seating at that point was in the play area, which I was excited about. Seeing the ship with children playing inside it made me smile as I thought of the memories I have of doing the same thing.

Craig and I were sitting quietly, some small talk going on between us here and there as we enjoyed our salty and chocolaty items of goodness, when he looked at me thoughtfully and said, “You know, I never thought I’d be in a McDonald’s play place with you until we were at least 25.” That stuck me so funny, and eventually, we were both in hysterics.

It was a great Saturday, not only because I was able to enjoy the outside, see an amazing art project, have McDonald’s, and see Craig, but also because I laughed harder than I have in a while.
